Let’s be real for a second: the mere thought of "family photo day" can send even the most organized parent into a mild tailspin. You’re probably picturing a chaotic scene involving mismatched socks, a toddler who suddenly decided naps are for losers, and that nagging worry that you’ll end up with a gallery full of forced, awkward smiles.
We’ve all been there. But here’s the secret: it doesn’t have to be a high-stress wrestling match. In fact, at NM Exposure, we’re firm believers that your session should actually be fun. (Yes, really!)
Our goal isn't just to get one decent shot for the holiday card; it's to capture the real, messy, beautiful connection your family shares. We handle the heavy lifting, the posing, the lighting, and even the "look over here!" antics, so you can just show up and be yourselves.
If you’re ready to ditch the "photo day panic" and actually enjoy the process, here are five easy steps to help you prep like a pro.
1. Coordinate, Don’t Match (And Put Comfort First)
Remember those 90s photos where everyone wore white t-shirts and identical denim jeans? Yeah, we’re not doing that.
Instead of aiming for "twinsies," aim for a cohesive color palette. Start by picking one "hero" outfit, usually something Mom feels amazing in, and then build the rest of the family's looks around it. Think about colors that complement each other rather than perfectly matching. If Mom is wearing a floral dress with bits of navy and mustard, have Dad in a solid navy polo and the kids in neutrals with a pop of mustard.
Most importantly: comfort is king. If your kids feel itchy, stiff, or restricted, it’s going to show on their faces. Skip the overly formal attire if it’s not "you." If your family is more at home in cozy sweaters and boots, lean into that! When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’ll relax naturally, and those are the moments we want to catch.

2. The "Hangry" Prevention Plan
We’ve seen it happen: a perfectly timed session meets a perfectly timed hunger strike. A hungry kid (or a hungry parent, for that matter) is a recipe for a meltdown.
The fix? Make sure everyone has a solid meal or a hearty snack before you arrive. But don't stop there, pack a "survival kit" of non-messy snacks. Think fruit snacks, cheerios, or apple slices. Avoid anything that stains (looking at you, chocolate and orange puffy snacks) or anything that takes ten minutes to chew.
A quick "bribe" (we prefer to call it a "positive reinforcement treat") can go a long way in getting that one extra smile when the energy starts to dip. And hey, don’t forget water! Staying hydrated keeps everyone’s spirits up, especially during those beautiful New England outdoor sessions.
3. Timing is Everything (Trust the Golden Hour)
When you look at those dreamy, glowing family portraits on our website, there’s a reason they look so magical: lighting.
We usually recommend "Golden Hour": that sweet spot of time just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. However, we know that for families with very young children, "Golden Hour" often overlaps with "Meltdown Hour."
Don't sweat it. If sunset is too late for your little ones, we’ll work with you to find a time and location that offers great shade and fits your kids' natural schedule. A well-rested child is way more important than a specific time on the clock. Tell us about your nap schedules, and we’ll help you pick the perfect window.
4. Let Go of "Perfect" and Let Kids Be Kids
This is the hardest part for most parents, but it’s the most important: Let go of the expectations.
If your toddler wants to run in circles, let ‘em run! If your preschooler is making silly faces instead of a "nice smile," laugh with them. When parents start stressing about behavior or constantly barking orders like "SMILE!" and "SIT STILL!", the kids sense that tension and shut down.
The best photos happen in the "in-between" moments: the snuggles, the tickles, and the genuine laughter. Our job at NM Exposure is to find the beauty in the chaos. We’re used to the energy of kids (and dogs!), and we promise we can get great shots even if you feel like things are falling apart. Just keep smiling and interacting with your family, and let us worry about the shutter speed.

5. Trust Your Professional (That's Us!)
You’ve done the hard work of getting everyone dressed and out the door. Now, it’s time to clock out.
When you hire a professional for your portraits, you’re hiring someone who knows how to work with light, angles, and: most importantly: family dynamics. We’ve got a whole bag of tricks to get kids engaged and parents relaxed.
Don't feel like you need to apologize for your kids being kids. We’ve seen it all, and we genuinely love the personality that comes through during a session. Whether we’re doing a fall picnic vibe or a session in your favorite local park, we’re there to guide you every step of the way.

Ready to Create Some Memories?
At the end of the day, these photos aren't just for you: they’re for your kids to look back on years from now. They won't remember that they had a crumb on their chin or that they didn't want to wear their shoes; they’ll see the way you looked at them and how much fun you had together.
If you’re looking for a stress-free photography experience in Massachusetts or around New England, we’d love to chat. Whether it’s for an upcoming milestone or "just because," we’re here to make sure you walk away with images you actually love.
